Linting in cosmetics: a major challenge for user experience

In the secrecy of the laboratories, experts juggle the stability, viscosity, and compatibility of formulas. Yet, once the product is in the hands of the end user, the reality on the ground can hold some surprises.

One of the most frustrating phenomena for a consumer is the appearance of small lint balls after application: lint formation.

To shed light on this issue, Syres conducted a large-scale survey of 2,300 consumers. The results reveal that this technical detail is far from insignificant.

A phenomenon far more widespread than we think

Linting is not an isolated incident. According to our study, 62,4% of consumers report having already observed this phenomenon after applying a cosmetic product.

While for the majority this remains occasional, some users encounter it regularly.

When and where does pilling occur?

The shedding occurs mainly in the morning, at the crucial time of the care routine.

The data shows two major triggers:

  • Physical contact 47,8% of cases occur simply by rubbing or touching the skin

  • The superposition 41,4% of respondents noticed lint appearing when applying a second product over the first.

The most affected areas of the face are:

  • the cheeks (53,3%)

  • the front (34,7%)

The culprits: is it the product or the routine?

While some products are more frequently singled out, such as:

  • moisturizing creams (48,6%)

  • foundations (24,6%)

  • serums (23,9%)

The product alone is rarely the sole cause.

Linting is primarily a phenomenon of interaction.

The determining factors cited by consumers are:

  • The layering of several treatments (52,2%)

  • Incompatibility between certain formulas (31,7%)

  • The use of textures that are too rich or thick (14,8%)

A real impact on brand loyalty

Linting is not just a simple aesthetic nuisance; it profoundly influences brand perception and purchasing behavior.

  • Average level of discomfort: 6,5/10

The psychological and commercial impact is tangible:

  • 64% of users say that this can affect their self-confidence throughout the day

  • Nearly half (48,9%) indicate that this problem directly influences their future product choices.

Conclusion: The importance of real-life experience

For formulators and brands, understanding these usage mechanisms is essential.

The performance of a formula does not stop at its stability in a test tube; it is played out every morning in the consumer's bathroom.

At Syres, we analyze these complex interactions through our sensory studies and consumer tests to ensure that technological innovation translates into real satisfaction on the skin.
